orma l ly, Asher Henderson, a student
at Thea Bowman Leadership Academy
in Gary, plays the French horn. But on
Thursday, she demonstrated the zhongruan, a Chi-
nese string instrument shaped like an odd banjo, for
high school students from six area schools at the
Music Festival. Henderson, 16, has been playing the
instrument for three years. “I’ve always been inter-
ested in the Chinese culture and to play this is an
opportunity for me to get involved with it,” she said.
Almost 330 students from Indiana and Michigan
took part in the festival, which demonstrated six
traditional Chinese instruments, including erhu, a
high-pitched, two-string fiddle, and the yangqin,
which is similar to a dulcimer. The festival was to
conclude with a concert.
“It’s really a good experience. We get to learn
about another culture and music we don’t normally
hear,” said Nicole Ndeto, a junior at Clay High
School in South Bend.
The festival’s organizer said it provides a positive
experience for everyone who is involved with it. The
high school students “have a chance to be exposed
to Chinese instruments and music,” he said, broad-
ening their horizons. “Through music, you can com-
municate. Music is a universal language.”

A
s the economic might of the East increases, savvy
students are strengthening their ties with the re-
gion by learning about its languages and culture.
Zayed University (ZU) revealed that more than 600
students have expressed an interest in Asian languages
this year with Korean and Chinese most in demand.
"The rise of South Korea, China and Japan, leads to the
strengthening of relations between the UAE and these
nations. Giving the young people of the UAE a chance to
learn about Asia will help them to distinguish themselves
in a competitive job market," said Christopher Brown,
founding director of the International College at ZU.
ZU's Asian language programmes also include cultur-
al activities like film festivals, concerts, calligraphy and
tea ceremonies. "I am fascinated by the history of China
and the rise of this country to become a major exporter
of goods to the world. So, I wanted to learn the language
and culture of this great nation," said ZU student Sandra
Owaida, 26.
