leven years ago, it had never
occurred to me that my
life would be connected
with China one day. I had
never ever thought of being
able to speak Chinese and becoming
the chief executive officer of the Aus-
tralia China Business Council. With
my understanding of China’s politics,
culture and society, I assumed the post
and have been engaged in promoting
Australia-China business exchanges
and cooperation.
As a sophomore, I participated in
the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Profi-
ciency Competition for Foreign Col-
lege students in 2006. I won the cham-
pionship in the Australian competition
area. Then I went to Beijing for the
final competition, where I met other
competitors from all over the world. In

2007, I was chosen to be an exchange
student by the University of New South
Wales to study at China’s Tsinghua
University for the 2007-2008 academic
year. That one-year study in China
greatly helped improve my Chinese
skills. I am sure I would not be what I
am now if I had not participated in the
“Chinese Bridge” competition.
What I am doing now is closely
connected with China. From the in-
creasingly frequent business contacts
between the two countries, I have seen
satisfying results and the positive trend
that the two countries’ markets depend
on each other and seek common de-
velopment together. In the meantime,
however, the Australian companies’
understanding of China is still very
limited and superficial. Under the in-
f luence of the mainstream media, the
Australian businessmen are aware of
“Sinomania” and willing to develop
the Chinese market. But they regard
the Chinese market as one big market,
without knowing it is made up of many
individual markets. Different provinces,
cities and regions in China have their
own unique advantages and character-
istics. Despite the centralized macro-
economic policies, the local govern-
ments have their own implementation
methods and preferential policies.
In my opinion, China ha s the
world’s most characteristic market: large
population, long history, multi-dialects,
complex cultures and uneven economic
development. Beijing is different from
Shanghai, the East different from the
West and the costal areas different from
